The orography can change in a matter of seconds and at any time. A clear example is the volcanic eruption that we experienced a few years ago on La Palma, caused by the Tajogaite volcano and which created around 47 new hectares, changing the physiognomy, the orography and gaining ground from the ocean. Another fascinating example is the mountains that can either grow thanks to the collision of continental plates, or even lose height due to climate change, earthquakes, erosion, among many other factors. It is incredible to see how our planet changes every day and discover how various phenomena and geological structures have influenced this change. Today we focus on diapirs , which are closer to home than we think. In Catalonia we find the so-called Cardona Salt Mountain that grows every year and is accentuated by rainwater (it favors the erosion of soil and rocks). Without going too far there is also the diapir of Poza de la Sal (Burgos), Cabezón de la Sal (Cantabria) or Pinoso (Alicante).

We are talking about unusual formations that usually attract a lot of attention either because of their colors or relevant values at a scientific, educational and cultural level. What is a diapir and its curious origins: Cardona Salt Mountain Cardona salt mountain. By Migeli Barrios The term diapir comes from Greek and means "to pass through . " It is a mobile mass that Colombia Mobile Number List intrudes and gradually makes its way through the rocks. They are structures formed by low-density materials with a lot of asticity and, as is the case with salts, with pressure they generate an ascension to the surface. These curious phenomena usually have a layer of salt or gypsum that is found in the depths and are covered by other sediments. This process lasts millions of years and, as is the case of the famous Cardona Salt Mountain, it continues to grow thanks to the erosion of precipitation although it cannot be perceived by the human eye. Its growth is real and as established by the Catalan Tourism Agency : “It is a cavity from which you have access to 120 meters, although in reality it is a diapir almost two kilometers long.

Cardona on a weekend: a medieval castle and a mountain of salt They usually develop in deep faults and their components are usually salts, gypsum and anhydrite. Thanks to the pressures they receive, they advance little by little towards the outside, creating these curious formations (they usually have a cylindrical shape) and a process known as diapirism. This is what the largest diapir in Europe is in Spain Salt Pool Salt Pool. By Kevers That's right, the largest and one of the most “perfect” diapirs that exist is located in Poza de la Sal, Burgos. It is an outcrop of saline masses shaped like a crater and is located in what millions of years ago was an inlet of salt water. This salt evaporated and with the passage of time, the deposition of various sediments and various geological phenomena, the salt has gained ground and has been able to advance until creating this fascinating “volcano”. It is striking because a peak stands out right in the middle that has not been affected by erosion for the moment.
